Youth Development

Youth Development

In order for families to move forward and achieve self-sufficiency, all family members must play a role. Therefore, all children, from infants to teens in high school, will have goals they will be working towards that will be included in the Family Action Plan. For example:

a 3-year-old can have a goal of learning colors and shapes.
a 10-year-old could have a goal to become a better reader.
a 16-year-old could have a goal to get a job after school.

Youth and Teen Workshops are offered at the same time as all adult workshops. While adults are in financial management workshops, teens and youth are learning about positive spending habits, saving money, and other age appropriate money topics.

This allows family members to work together and move forward as a team. By teaching young people skills such as financial management, time management, and stress management they may not have to experience some of the difficulties their parents have gone through.

Depending on the needs of the families, workshops specifically geared towards youth and teens will be offered that will include boys groups, girls groups, anger management, and self-esteem.

Ben & Jerry's

The Ben & Jerry’s Employment Training Program is offered for teens ages 16-19. Teens are trained in customer service skills and then have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working at the Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream shop located on the University of Minnesota campus.

Teens will work with a job coach that will help them create a resume and make plans for employment and advancement beyond the Ben & Jerry’s store.
