(President and CEO of Community Action of Minneapolis Bill Davis, Senator Al Franken, Community Action of Minneapolis customer Dana Finn and her niece Lillian, and Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman)
On Friday December 9, 2011, Community Action of Minneapolis had the opportunity to partner with Senator Al Franken and State Commissioner Mike Rothman to speak about the importance of LIHEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program) and how the cuts will affect Minneapolis residents living in poverty. Dana Finn, a Community Action of Minneapolis customer and participant in Community Action of Minneapolis’s newest program called Step Towards Affordable Energy Payment (STAEP), and her niece Lillian, got to meet the Senator and Commissioner and were able to speak about how the energy assistance program helped her when she was laid off from her full time job and unable to pay her bills. Through the STAEP program, Ms. Finn, was able to get her utilities reconnected, and was set up on an affordable payment plan. She has also attended classes to learn how to read her energy bills, along with how to budget her finances, and how to advocate for herself. Senator Franken is co-sponsoring the LIHEAP Protection Act, a bipartisan, bill that would restore funding to the energy assistance program.
